Pitching
in on the global effort to protect the environment, a group of
employees from the Cebu office of Aboitiz-owned Pilmico Foods
Corporation headed off to the wetland sanctuary of Olango Island
last April for a day of mangrove planting.
Located off the eastern side of Cebu and just 5 kilometers away from
Mactan Island, Olango is site of a 920-hectare protected wetland
that is home to thousands of migratory birds every year.
Determined to help preserve the sanctuary, the 26-strong Pilmico
team hit the shores of San Vicente, a barangay in the southwestern
part of the island. Armed with about 10,000 mangrove propagules, the
group successfully planted at least 7,500 propagules over a hectare
of mangrove area.
The successful mangrove planting activity was done in coordination
with the Philippine Business for Social Progress, a non-profit
foundation that supports sustainable development in Olango.
Pilmico Foods Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aboitiz
Equity Ventures Inc., and has been providing Filipinos with high
quality flour for over 40 years now.
