Pilmico transforms Tacloban survivors into backyard farmers

22 May, 2015, Tacloban, LEYTE – Feeds and flour manufacturer Pilmico is continuously sparking up hope for Yolanda survivors here, transforming them into backyard farmers with sustainable livelihood to help them start anew.

Under the Mahalin Pagkaing Atin (MPA) campaign, the Aboitiz food subsidiary distributed egg machines, piglets, and agriposts or feed stocks, initially assisting 11 families in the area where thousands of lives were lost and billions worth of properties were destroyed when the typhoon struck.

Throughout the country, Pilmico has donated a total of 171 egg machines, 76 piglets, and 14 agriposts to assist families residing in areas of tragedy, poverty, and conflict.

Each agriposts received feedbags as restarting capital while two piglets and its four-month feed consumption were given to hog raisers. Each set of egg machines, meanwhile, contained 48 heads of ready-to-lay chickens and the corresponding one-month feed consumption.

To celebrate hope, the company organized a forum expo at Basey Municipal Gymnasium in Samar where beneficiaries shared their journey in rebuilding lives after the disaster and how they have recovered so far.

During the forum, Pilmico also gave recognition to the so-called modern day heroes who went out of their way to help those in need during the calamity. Other event highlights include animal husbandry seminars, egg cooking demo from celebrity chef Boy Logro, and food kiosks that showcase the different flavors of Tacloban.
